Silicon nitride is Ceramitell's flagship material. The BLK series Si₃N₄ hot surface igniter reaches service temperature in 3 seconds and survives 100,000+ ignition cycles — proven across our 180,000-unit/year Italian pellet stove OEM partnership. Industry-default substrate for thermal cycling applications.
Property values below are typical for our standard Si₃N₄ production grades. Our HIP-processed (Hot Isostatic Pressed) grades approach 99.5% theoretical density — used for the highest-precision bearing balls and cutting tools.
| Property | Unit | Standard | HIP-Processed | Igniter Grade |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Density | g/cm³ | 3.20 | 3.25 | 3.20 |
| Hardness (HV) | Vickers | 1500 | 1600 | 1450 |
| Flexural Strength | MPa | 900 | 1100 | 850 |
| Fracture Toughness | MPa·m½ | 7.5 | 8.0 | 7.0 |
| Max Service Temp | °C | 1400 | 1300 | 1400 |
| Thermal Conductivity | W/m·K | 28 | 30 | 22 |
| Thermal Expansion (RT–1000°C) | ×10⁻⁶/K | 3.2 | 3.2 | 3.4 |
| Thermal Shock Resistance | ΔT °C | 900 | 950 | 1000 |
| Dielectric Strength | kV/mm | 12 | 13 | 11 |
Each Si₃N₄ grade tunes sintering aids and process parameters for a specific application family. Igniter grade prioritizes thermal cycling; HIP grade prioritizes density and strength; structural grade prioritizes machinability.
Optimized for 100,000+ thermal cycles. Used in pellet stove, BBQ, gas furnace, and HVAC hot surface igniters. UL/CE certified across 12V–230V. Heat-up to service temperature in 3 seconds.
Hot Isostatic Pressed for void-free density (99.5% theoretical). The premium grade for precision balls (G3 grade) and high-RPM hybrid bearings. Roundness ≤0.08 μm, surface Ra ≤0.02 μm.
Optimized for machinability and cost-effective custom geometry production. Used for shafts, turbines, lift tubes, and custom-machined components. Tolerance ±0.005 mm achievable.
High-speed cutting tool blanks for cast iron and superalloy machining. Higher hardness (HV 1600) and edge retention than alumina ceramic inserts. Stock blank or custom insert geometry.
Across our 42 export markets, silicon nitride components ship into these six application categories most often. Each entry lists the grade we typically supply.
BLK series Si₃N₄ igniters for pellet stoves, BBQ grills, gas furnaces, water heaters, and HVAC. 100K+ cycle life, 3-sec heat-up, UL/CE certified.
HIP-processed Si₃N₄ balls — diameter 0.4–100mm. Lighter than steel (3.2 vs 7.8 g/cm³), 40% less centrifugal load at high RPM. The default for hybrid bearings.
Si₃N₄ balls + steel rings hybrid bearings for high-speed spindles (up to 60,000 RPM), wind turbine gearboxes, aerospace gyroscopes. Diameter 3–250 mm.
Si₃N₄ turbocharger rotors for high-performance automotive applications — 30% lighter than Inconel, faster spool-up, no lubrication thermal limit.
Si₃N₄ lift tubes, stalk tubes, and thermocouple protection sheaths for low-pressure die-casting of aluminum and zinc. Low thermal expansion = no cracking in cyclic service.
Si₃N₄ cutting tool blanks and inserts for cast iron, hardened steel, and Inconel machining. Better edge retention than alumina at higher cutting speeds.
Silicon nitride is the thermal-shock champion of our materials. Pick it when thermal cycling or high-RPM bearing loads matter — otherwise alumina is more cost-effective for static or low-cycle service.
Our longest-running OEM partner switched from a European competitor's alumina igniters to our Si₃N₄ BLK series in 2018. They ship 180,000 units/year, and warranty returns dropped 38% in the first 12 months. Now in year 7 of supply.
